Blue Stallion Lager Competition 2019

There may be time left to jump into this competition if you hurry. You can pick up your yeast now! Take a clean/sterile container to Blue Stallion and talk to Dave or Jim. Exact turn in dates have not been set yet, but you have roughly 7 weeks left.

NHC

Signups are closed for the 2019 National Homebrewing Competition. If you submitted, you should know by now how many entries you have and which region you will be submitting for. You have 7 days from notification to pay and register your beers/styles. BOCK plans on helping members with shipment costs of entries; more info will be sent out when that gets closer.

If you are submitting entries to NHC, please let Dirk and Clay know so they can document who’s participating as well as try to organize a bulk/discounted shipment. Please email secondary@bockbrew.com and rcbunn1970@gmail.com with your name, contact info, and which region your NHC entries will be going to. Blount County brew-off (TN)

The Blount County Brew-off is a homebrew competition organized by the Blount County Homebrewers in Maryville, TN. The coordinator of this competition has come up and judged the Bluegrass Cup with us, so let’s show some reciprocity and participate and judge in their competition. Registration ended on Feb 16. Judging takes place on Feb 23 in Maryville.

Dirk has volunteered to take entries to the competition as long as you can get them to him by February 21st. If you are interested in having Dirk haul your beer down, reach out to him at secondary@bockbrew.com.

Lemons Mill Brewery Competition

Harrodsburg’s Lemons Mill Brewery is having their second annual competition on February 22nd. Entries due February 18th through 21st (BOCK has talked them down to only 4 bottles due per entry instead of 6). You can drop off you entries to Rock House Brewing through Wednesday, February 20th.

The winner’s beer will go on tap at Lemons Mill Brewery with the proceeds from that beer going to charity. Let’s represent BOCK well and be a good neighbor by supporting them as competitors and as volunteers!

BOCK Barrel Project

The 2018 Sour Barrel extraction date has been set for Sunday, March 24th. You should be in an email chain with more details, but reach out to eventcoordinator@bockbrew.com if you are part of this and have questions.

The 2019 Bourbon Barrel Fill is in the final style choosing step now. Recipe discussions will be coming soon to those who sign up to participate. April 21st is the proposed fill date, but that is subject to change.

Barrels for Sale

We have 2 barrels for sale from last year’s Barrel Project. One of them has been empty for several months and is probably not desirable for aging beer without conditioning. The other will be the soon-to-be emptied barrel from the 2018 Sour Barrel project and can be used for aging beer if you don’t mind them being soured.

They are currently set at $100 each, or you can make an offer for both. If you are interested, please contact eventcoordinator@bockbrew.com.

New Website

The new BOCK website is almost complete and ready to share with the club.

BOCK T-Shirts

We’ve delayed this due to working on a new 25th BOCK Anniversary design, as well as looking into different shirts (lighter, softer blend). We’ll talk about this at the March meeting if an email doesn’t go out sooner.

Bulk Malt Purchase

It’s almost time for another bulk malt purchase. Brewer Dude is once again hosting this through their online store. If you have not registered as a BOCK member on their site, you will not have access to the Bulk Malt special sale section (nor will you get that sweet 10% discount on the rest of the store); to do so, reach out to Brewer Dude support with a picture of your 2019 BOCK Membership card (or name if you don’t have your card yet so they can corroborate with the BOCK treasurer) and your Brewer Dude username. Dates are as follows:

  • March 1 – Ordering window opens
  • March 29 – Ordering window closes
  • April 1-5 – Window when order is delivered

Renewal Time

A new year means it’s time to renew or join. Here are some of the perks of being a BOCK member:

  • 10% discount at Brewer Dude Homebrew Store
  • Several annual club-only competitions (we had 5 last year)
  • BJCP training available (additional cost, limited spots, occurs every other year)
  • Feedback on your brews
  • Members’ tasty brews
  • An open and friendly community (saved the best for last)

BrewerDude.com Brick & Mortar and More

Nathan from Brewer Dude sent a survey out last month about a potential physical location out towards Athens. Due to the responses, they will not be opening a store in that location, but continue to look for a more centralized place to set some roots.

Brewer Dude is now offering discounted AHA memberships. We’ll get more information about this for the next meeting. If you need to renew before then, reach out to team@brewerdude.com.
